The CACJ Foundation was established to improve the quality of criminal justice by engaging in activities designed to educate judges, attorneys and members of the public by developing and disseminating a body of new knowledge about the criminal justice system. The Foundation operates exclusively for scientific, educational and charitable purposes, and sponsors the following events and scholarships each year.

Charles R. Garry
Memorial Lecture
Charles R. Garry was a Founding Member of the CACJ Foundation, CACJ past president and prominent civil rights attorney, who represented several high-profile political cases during the 1960s and 70s, including Black Panther Party leaders Huey Newton and Bobby Seale. His innovative/groundbreaking legal approach, and unwavering commitment to justice made him ‘The People’s Advocate’. He used America’s courtrooms as a platform through which issues like racism and economic inequity were constantly addressed. Shortly after his death in 1991, the Foundation established the annual Charles R. Garry Memorial Lecture, held each year in conjunction with CACJ’s Fall seminar to recognize and honor criminal defense attorneys outstanding in their field, committed to continuing the struggle of seeking justice in the courtroom

Jerry J. Kenkel
Scholarships
Proposed by Professor Dane A Cameron, California State University, Chico, and close friend of Jerry Kenkel’s, the Jerry Kenkel Memorial Scholarships are issued annually to 10 students of CSUC to attend CACJ’s Annual Fall Seminar. Jerry was a big supporter of the Pre-Law Students at CSUC attending CACJ conferences because the college sees literally dozens of grant proposals and programs for students who want to study in the field of criminal justice on the prosecution’s side and almost nothing on the criminal defense side, so this scholarship provides opportunities that are not otherwise available for these students to see things from the defense side. The centerpiece to CSUC’s Legal Studies Program is the Community Legal Information Center (CLIC). This program is made up of about one-hundred students who work in a law office which provides free legal services to the North state client community, who assisted almost ten-thousand clients last year of which ten of these students are selected to attend CACJ’s annual Criminal Defense Seminar.

Joyce O. Yoshioka Scholarship
The Foundation sponsors an annual scholarship in memory of Joyce O. Yoshioka, former member of CACJ’s Board of Governors and outstanding criminal defense attorney, who died in 1990, at the age of 42. Joyce served as Ventura County’s Chief Deputy Public Defender for six years and before that worked for the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office as a trial lawyer and supervisor. As a tribute to her career dedicated to helping others, the CACJ Foundation established this scholarship fund to allow for an attorney, paralegal, law student or investigator involved in criminal defense work to apply for a full tuition of grants to CACJ programs for one year, including the CACJ/CPDA Capital Case Defense Seminar, the Annual Spring Seminar, the Appellate Practice Seminar and the Annual Criminal Defense Seminar.

“The specific and primary purpose for which this corporation is organized is to improve the quality of criminal justice by engaging in activities designed to educate judges, attorneys and members of the public and by developing and disseminating a body of new knowledge about the criminal justice system. This corporation shall be operated in connection with California Attorneys for Criminal Justice.“
